Tuesday Night
Living a block from the beach always allowed for the easy and pleasant late evening strolls along the beach. That night, with my friend Evelyn, we walked the beach to check out the activities around the Pier. Half way along the beach a policeman greeted us politely. “Sorry the beach is closed tonight, you can’t go any further!”
“Why!” we asked.
“There was a plane crash earlier and we don’t want wreckage or bodies to be seen or disturbed!” We were actually surprised he shared so much information with us in such a polite manner. Instead, Evelyn and I went to the water’s edge and each said our own private blessings for the situation unfolding.
My phone rang around 1:00am. It was Tom! What was wrong!
He began “You didn’t make it to the beach this afternoon, I was waiting for you. I have to tell you what happened! I was sitting in our normal place; it wasn’t very crowded compared to the other days last week. I was just looking out to sea, thinking. In the distance I noticed a plane, a small one coming into land, probably at Boca Raton Airport. He was low, too low I thought!
Then coming from the other direction, I noticed another small plane at about the same flying height. They were heading directly for each other. My thoughts raced. Can’t they see each other! They are going to crash! This can’t be true!”
“Then in an instant the two planes collided right in front of me. Their wings crumpled and then they flew by each other only because of the velocity already in action. One plane dived into the sea about fifty yards to the left. The other plane ended in the water about 30 yards to the right. Behind and around me I heard voices and sounds from the other people on the beach. A wave of shock rippled across the air. The sirens started coming from the distant places and I just stood and looked. There was nothing else I could do.”
No-one who witnessed the crash was allowed to leave until the police got some sort of account. As it turned out that I was the prime witness. The officers asked questions but they appeared not to be listening to my answers.
I saw the rescue boats out scouring the surface. They were looking in the wrong directions. The planes had landed in places different from where they were looking, I told the policeman taking down my account
His reply was short and curt, “We know where to look!”
“But the planes are not where you say they are!” I insisted
“We know what we are doing. You can go when I have taken your statement.” He continued.
Just then the news crews arrived and fingers pointed in my direction. I was interviewed for the 10:00pm news report.
“Can we meet tomorrow, I need to talk more to help myself understand and resolve the feelings I have now!”
I agreed, set the time and said good night to Tom.
My mind was ticking over so fast. There was great meaning to this whole set of circumstances, but they were not clear quite yet.
Wednesday Afternoon
I got to the beach first that day and spent time just looking out into the distant sea, remembering the happenings of the previous day. Tom arrived a little while later.
Sitting side by side he shared how his status at school changed to celebrity. So many students and parents had seen him on the news the evening before. He had been bombarded with questions all day and he was exhausted.
Tom was a sports coach at one of the local high schools. Besides asking about the accident, his students were also asking questions about death and what it means.
Tom began, “Before we met, I never talked about death. I avoided the subject even when my parents died. Death scared me. Today I was able to give my students answers, honest answers that felt right, that they understood and that they could also question in their own way. You taught me not to be afraid of discussing the subject of death and perhaps even more for me not to be quite so afraid of my own death, whenever that may be.”
Tom continued, “This all started with a double rainbow. It is like the whole thing was planned and moved along by what you call Spirit. What do you think?”
That exact same thought had crossed my mind more than once since our meeting. “I definitely have to agree, something far greater than us was guiding and teaching us both. “I am so grateful to you for sharing it with me!” he stated.
Tom and I spoke from time to time after that evening. He was to have some more very powerful revelations and a healing relationship with his younger son. A son he had not really wanted because he did not fit the “jock image” of a coach’s son. Last I heard, they were both doing well and had gained a greater respect, understanding and love for both their differences and similarities.
The weaving and meaning of these three stories taking place at the same location was profound and I was the “common denominator”. From the beginning scene of a man dying while watching the sea, the distant storm and the beautiful double rainbow to represent the bridge between the worlds of the physical and spiritual heaven, through the experience and memories of great loss of parents, family and friends, brought to the surface through the mirror of greater loss due the gross hatred and fear in the Holocaust, and then witnessing immediate death through unforeseen mistiming and accidental ends.
For me this chance meeting has been a lesson in the interweaving of lives and circumstances from what appear to be unrelated people and areas to present life changing lessons.
If just one person had taken action to help the man when he first collapsed off the park bench, regardless of whether he had been alive or not in that moment, Lori and I would not have been able to participate in a remarkable unfolding sequence. And I cannot help but wonder what would have changed!
This is true of life for all of us every day, if we would only pay more attention and act as our intuition and heart guides us, could the course of history be changed for the better?
This is where we are now and we are the change of the course of history!

It’s interesting to see this point of view. I can’t say fore sure if I agree or not, but it is something I will think about now.
Looking at new perspectives helps us grow and discover more about the world within and around us!
